How do you "Qualify" to be a Challenge participant?

All Chester County Firefighters Muster and Challenge (CCFMC) competitors must be active members of a fire company in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Competitors must be prepared to show fire company affiliation when asked to do so by any member of the CCFMC staff.

All events involve a team of five firefighters. Each participating fire company may register up to two teams in the Challenge. For the purpose of registering, a fire company that has a main station and a substation(s) will be considered a single organization and may register no more than two teams. Fire Companies registering more than one team may not switch members between their teams during the challenge.

How do you register?

Registration for the Challenge can be sent via internet or the US Mail by completing the registration form. A registration fee of $50 for each team will be due with the submission of the registration form. Participating teams are considered registered when a properly completed registration form is received with payment by the registration committee. Registration forms and fees must be received by the committee by September 8, 2008. All registering teams must name the team Captain at the time of registration.

If for good cause a team is unable to pre-register, they will be permitted to make a request for late entry into the Challenge up to the day of the event. A request for late entry will be made to the Challenge committee for approval or denial, based on the circumstances presented at the time of the request. If the request is approved, there will be an additional fee of $20.00 assessed per team registering after September 8, 2008. All decisions made by the event committee regarding late entry registrations will be final.

How do you become an Event Champion?

The Challenge consists of six (6) competition events, all scored individually by a point system.

The Event Champion will be that team with the highest combined point total for all six events.

In the event of a tie after the conclusion of all six (6) events, the teams involved in the tie will compete against each other in a run-off for that event and the best time in the run-off will break the tie.

How are the events of the Challenge judged?

Start All events will begin with a start command of "Get ready, set," and an audible sound.
A "false" start will result in a restart on the first occurrence. An additional false start will result in a ten second penalty being assessed against the team(s) committing the infraction.

All required elements of an event must be completed by the team before timing will be stopped by the Judge. Any safety infractions observed by the Judge during the competition or any missed elements of the event will result in the assessment of a penalty per each infraction.

Finish Upon completing of the event, the judge will stop timing and times will be recorded. Judges will also inspect competitors and equipment (if appropriate) for infractions.

During the competition all required protective equipment must be donned and worn as instructed. Competitors shall receive a two second penalty for each infraction found by the judge.

What equipment is required for the competition?

TURN-OUT GEAR. All competitors must provide their own protective equipment for the Challenge. All turnout gear must be approved for structural fire fighting consistent with NFPA standards in effect at the time of the event. Event Judges will inspect all gear prior to participation to ensure compliance and their decisions are final. Articles of turnout gear and SCBA must not be removed or lost during the competition. If dropped, they must be retrieved and correctly replaced by the competitor before continuing. Non-retrieval results in a five second infraction. Turn-out Gear shall include; bunker coat, bunker pants with suspenders, bunker boots, gloves, nomex hood, helmet, and SCBA.

SCBA. A high pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (air pack & regulator) will be provided by the competitor. The SCBA must be worn by all participants for specified events.

What happens on the day of the Muster and Firefighter Challenge?
Team Captains must report to the central judging area at 9:30 am for a Rules Briefing.
This meeting is mandatory for all team Captains.

The Rules and Regulations and the Challenge events will be described during the meeting. Any team Captain not attending the meeting will disqualify their team from the challenge. All other competitors are expected to be present and checked in at the event site no later than 9:45 a.m. Each competitor must personally be present for check in.

Prior to the start of the Challenge events, an official team photograph will be taken by the Muster Staff. All team members must be present for the photograph.

The Start Order will be determined by the event Staff.

The "next-up" competitors must be in the staging area with necessary turnout gear when the preceding participant is at the start line. Competitors not ready for the start signal will be disqualified. Lane assignments are randomized and preference for lanes will not be allowed. Management reserves the right to change all order assignments.

Each team will be assigned a team number that will be displayed on the gear of each team member.

Non-competitors are not allowed on the Challenge course at any time.

Competitors are permitted on the course only when they are competing in an event. Penalties, including disqualification, may be assessed for violation of this rule. Disrupting the competition may result in disqualification.

Disputes regarding penalties will be resolved by the competitor and the Chief Judge. No other individuals are to interrupt this process. Other individuals disrupting the dispute resolution may result in the competitor being disqualified. All decisions by the Chief Judge are final.
